Cyclists Beware

I have had a lot of contact in relation to the Police enforcing cyclist crossing rules at pedestrian crossings both at Pullenvale Road and more particularly at the Western Freeway/Moggill Road crossing.
Police inform me there is a heavy penalty for cyclists who cycle over pedestrian crossings. For your information I have attached the Transport Operations Regulation that covers this matter. Click here to read.
Cyclists certainly don’t like being pulled up by the Police given some of the comments that have been forwarded to my office but at least we are able to make you aware that this is the regulation and that it is being enforced.
The addition of a green cycle light with the traffic lights would allow cyclists to continue on their cycle. Neither of these intersections are busy ones for pedestrians. I have added an online poll for your opinion on whether cycle lights should be added at both of these intersections. Please give me your feedback!
Those who are regular readers will know that I have taken up cycling in my middle years along with many men and women around my age. It is a great way to keep fit, control middle-age spread and in particular, make some good friends. With this comes an interest in matters that affect cyclists and cycle safety.
Currently, on average, one cyclist a day is being hit by a car in Queensland and there are a significant number of lifelong disabilities and deaths as a result.
I am not certain if licensing riders would reduce this toll although I am fairly sure it would not be a popular step for recreational riders.
I have included an online poll where you can tell me whether you believe cyclists should be licenced or not. I do hope you will give me your feedback.
