Chapel Hill State School Asbestos

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

I was horrified to learn that terribly damaged and deteriorating asbestos flooring in classrooms and the administration block at Chapel Hill State School had been reported in 2007.

I was further horrified to learn that the only response from the Govt was to send two guys from Building Services out ‘equipped’ with a roll of tape to fix the problem.

The asbestos is raised at the edges, full of holes and shows evidence of damage from moving furniture. I exposed this situation in my capacity as Shadow Minister for Education & Training in an Estimates Committee hearing.

Under pressure, the Minister agreed to remove the asbestos in the September school holidays.

Better late than never.

I am pleased to have forced some action BUT it should not be necessary to embarrass the Govt into action just to get our classrooms made safe.
