No Community in Queensland Can Believe Bligh's Promises

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

The State Government has put the Goodna Bypass project they described as "crazy and illogical", "ill-fated" and "ridiculous and discredited" back on the agenda, according to Member for Moggill Bruce Flegg.

Dr Flegg said in a speech to Parliament yesterday that the Government’s startling backflip on the Goodna Bypass came in a letter from Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt, despite the fact that the Government declared less than twelve months ago that they would never support the proposal.

"This is flabbergasting hypocrisy.

"No community in Queensland can believe this Government’s word on anything.

"And the whole thing is made worse by the fact that this decision was taken without any community consultation whatsoever, with residents in the affected area not even told about the Government’s reversal," Dr Flegg said today.

The now Deputy Premier told Parliament in March and October last year that the only way to stop the Goodna Bypass was to vote for Labor at last year’s Federal Election.

"It seems that the Government’s opposition to the proposal last year was nothing more than a political tact to propel their Labor colleagues into office federally,"

"The Government even sent the Parliamentary Secretary for Roads, with a letter from Kevin Rudd in hand to address Moggill-Bellbowrie residents at last year’s community meeting to reiterate State and Federal Labor’s opposition to the proposal,"

Dr Flegg said that residents who suffer substantial losses as a result of being deceived by the State Government should be entitled to compensation.

"Those many people who bought and built house because of the Government’s iron clad guarantee will now suffer a dramatic decline in property value as a result of the Government’s deception,"

"If residents had been deceived by a real estate agent, they would have recourse to the law, they clearly deserve some compensation here," Dr Flegg concluded.
