Government says no to local High School
Monday, 01 October 2007 10:00
The State Minister for Education has written to petitioners requesting that a new high school be built in local area saying that the govt has no intention of considering one for the next 20 yrs.
He confirms that local students will continue to be outside the catchment area for KSHS.
In a rather contradictory statement he affirms that school boundaries will be imposed on an equidistant basis. This is a contradictory statement given that many local residents who are outside the catchment area for KSHS are in fact much closer to Kenmore than they are to the nearest high school in Ipswich.
Bureau of Statistics figures clearly show substantial demand within the age population that would be serviced by a high school.
I know that the nearly 4000 local residents who have petitioned the Government and myself disagree with the Minister’s statements. To rule out consideration for a high school in a rapidly growing urban area for the next 20 years is a failure to plan for present and continuing growth.
This issue has been precipitated by the government drawing an arbitrary line on a map and excluding local students from the catchment of the high school they have traditionally attended and for which in fact Mt Crosby is the largest feeder school.
