Vehicle congestion at Mt Crosby State School

Booming enrolments at Mt Crosby State School mean that a significant problem has emerged as hundreds of cars seek to drop off or pick up children at the same time each morning and afternoon.
With the limited availability of public transport and the ages of many of the children attending the school (which now has over a hundred students in prep year) this is a problem that will only worsen.
Brisbane City Council will be implementing an Active Schools Transport Program at the start of Term 1 this year.
This program has been introduced at many Brisbane schools and aims to encourage walking or cycling to school and to work ensuring that children are safe if they do so.
This is one important measure towards trying to address the problem of not only congestion but also the safety of small children as so many vehicles descend on a small area over such a short period of time.
The school is also keen to see alternatives to vehicles accessing the front entrance to the school and where practicable park a little distance from the school and take a pleasant walk to the school with their children reducing the burden of congestion around the service road on Mt Crosby Road.
Vehicle congestion at the entry to primary schools in particular is a big issue in the local area and throughout Brisbane and there is no single solution to it. My congratulations to the Mt Crosby State School, who are very proactive in seeking solutions and late last year conducted a meeting of State and local representatives along with Police, Main Roads and Transport Officers.
I am pleased to support the school in its call for parents to assist in minimising traffic congestion and in particular minimising any activity which may pose a danger to young children at the school.
