2.00 pm Anzac Day Commemorative Cricket Match - Brookfield Showgrounds, Brookfield Rd Brookfield
In December 1915 the Australian soldiers of the 2/14 Light Horse tried to relieve the tension of the bloody Gallipoli campaign by holding a cricket match at a place called Shell Green.
As a mark of respect for Anzac Day and Anzacs, this event is to be commemorated with a 20/20 cricket match on Anzac Day at 2.00 pm between the Light Horse Regiment and the Brookfield Cricket Club (Brisbane’s oldest cricket club) at the Brookfield show grounds.
Organisers have taken great care to avoid any clash with Anzac Day commemoration services or social gatherings immediately after. It is intended that a two-up game, a bar and canteen services will be available and all funds raised will go to the Peacekeepers Memorial Project.
It is hoped that this will become an annual event raising funds for service organisations.
I would encourage all local residents and particularly those with service connections within their families to think about attending as a way of remembering and celebrating those who gave so much in the service of our country, and in particular those who made the supreme sacrifice.
