Wear orange and say no to bullying today

LNP Shadow Minister for Education Dr Bruce Flegg will join children and adults around the state today and raise awareness of Say No to Bullying Day.

Dr Flegg said he was wearing his orange tie to recognise the importance of educating both adults and children on the impact of bullying in our schools and in the community.

“Bullying is a growing problem that can have a life-long impact on victims,” he said.

“Today is about educating parents and children about what they can do to stop bullying in schools.

“I know that students at schools across Queensland will participate in special activities to explore the aspects of bullying and I encourage all teachers and students to keep this message going.”

Dr Flegg said the Bligh Labor Government could take a stance against bullying by adopting the LNP’s anti-cyber bullying laws, which would allow for the immediate confiscation of devices used for recording or viewing images of violence against children.

“Too often we hear reports of school students staging brutal attacks to film the violence on their mobile phones or posting offensive material online,” he said.

“It is important to send a message to students that these actions are no more acceptable than any other form of intimidation.

“Technology has made it easier than ever for bullies to attack their victims and the consequences can be long lasting.

“The LNP is committed to tackling bullying and youth violence and I call on the Bligh Labor Government to get on board and say No to Bullying.”
