School Speed Zone at last

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

After years of campaigning for better safety around our schools in central Kenmore I can only say I am delighted to finally see the commencement of a school speed zone trial.

For years parents and schools have expressed deep concern about safety through this area and told harrowing stories of near misses.

The campaign to get a school speed zone in central Kenmore has taken many years including a petition sponsored by Robert Dupont.  I must say that community support of this nature is vital in getting favourable decisions.

The school speed zone will be in force when school resumes next week and I urge local residents to quickly adjust their driving pattern.

Initially the State Government indicated they would only trial the school speed zone at Our Lady of the Rosary but I am really pleased they have instituted the school speed zone I requested on behalf of local residents that includes both Kenmore State School and OLR.

The Government’s initial proposal of simply lowering the speed limit from 60 kph to 50 kph I do not believe would have been the appropriate response.  The period of greatest danger is certainly around school times and the attention that a school speed zone draws to the safety of children is a vital part of why they have been so effective.

I urge local residents to obey the 40 kph speed limit during school times.  It is likely that local police will conduct some enforcement.
